Let me share some quick, but essential tips to kickstart your wildlife photography adventure:
- Passion is Key: If you have a desire to photograph, you undoubtedly have a desire to be in nature.
- Time and Transportation: Unless you’re in a park, you’ll need both to get to your shooting locations.
- The Right Gear: You don’t need the most expensive equipment, but something you can fully utilize. From my experience, your shortest lens should be at least 300mm. A zoom lens is a good option.
- Camouflage: To capture great shots, you need to get close to the animal. This is the challenging part. The easiest way is to pay to use a commercial hide with guaranteed wildlife sightings (the location is fed, and the animals are accustomed to the surroundings).
- DIY Camouflage: It’s more exciting to camouflage yourself (poncho, camouflage net, or tent) in a suitable location and wait. There’s no guarantee of anything, just the mud, heat, and other inconveniences you’ll need to overcome. But if you manage to capture an animal, the satisfaction is immense.
- Know Your Subject: It’s advisable (for me, it’s mandatory) to know where you’re going, what you’ll be photographing, and to study the animal’s habits and lifestyle. Be very careful during breeding seasons or when animals have young – avoid disturbing them.
- Basic Photo Editing Skills: All great photos you’ve admired have been processed on a computer. Some adjustments, big or small, are always necessary to make a photo appealing.
This is a brief and hopefully clear overview of getting started with wildlife photography.
